84.5-87 In '84.5 VW changed the chassis to accommodate a larger, 14 gal (can't seem to get more tan 12 into mine !?) fuel tank, which required shrinking the spare tire well to hold only a "donut". They also changed the name (in the US) from the Rabbit Convertible to Cabriolet. In '86, they added a 3rd brake light in the trunk lid.
88-89 Added big, curvey plastic bumpers and ground effects that blend with the body. Retains the simple, tunable CIS fuel system of the older cars. Viewd by some as the apex of Cabriolet design, coupling simple Rabbit technology with the big-valve engine and updated styling.
90-93 In '90 the CIS was replaced with Digifont (AKA: DigiCrap), and there was much gnashing of teeth amongst the tuners. These cars included more options than previous years, like power windows, power locks, power tops, heated seats, 14" alloy wheels, 4-headlight grills and driver's side airbags.
'93 was the last year for the A1. Not bad for a chasis that originally rolled out in 1975. A very limited number of the '93 cars were produced, as "Cabriolet Classics." They started rolling out the new "Cabrio" (no longer called Cabriolet) that same year. The Cabrio is based on the A3 chassis Golf. There was no production A2 Golf convertible, and there will be no production A4 Golf convertible- as they're going with the New Beetle instead.
